January 19, 1977: It snows in Florida. It was just a dusting, but it remains the only recorded snowfall in the history of "the Sunshine State."
A cold front combined with a high-pressure area over the Mississippi River Valley. This caused cold air to move south across Florida, causing both snow flurries and record-low temperatures for the region. Snow reached as far south as Homestead, 40 miles south of Miami.
One person was killed in a car accident in Central Florida. Most of the damage was done to the State's citrus fruit industry.*
